Fife Dog Show 2008.

Even the rain in the afternoon didn’t dampen people’s enthusiasm for the inaugural greyhound rescue Fife dog show. The decision to find an indoor venue to host the event was certainly a wise one! and one we will be looking at in future years. But what a day, certainly everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and all the dogs at the show did their owners proud, they certainly seemed to sense something special was happening, anyway on to the show itself.

The day started with the best junior handler which saw 18 entrants, an excellent turnout considering the early start, 11:00 AM. After much deliberation we had our first show winner, DUKE with handler Ellie. The first three in this category received a trophy along with their rosettes, certificates and prizes, with every child that entered receiving a goody bag on exiting the ring.

The next class was best 6 legs although there was not a lot of human flesh on show! This was eventually won by PADDY and his handler Eleanor. LOFTY won the male greyhound category and was crowned prince of the greyhound world before we had our largest entry for best loveable face with 52 dogs entering. So many that we had to do 2 heats and a final before finally settling on MISTY as having the cutest face.

Next class saw the non-greyhound fraternity get their chance to show what they could do and it was good to see so many other different breeds at the show, in the end there was only one obvious winner, the Tamaskan GHENGIS KAHN with handler Melanie.

The next class gave dog owners the chance to show their whole family of dogs. After carefully deliberating over the 16 entrants the judge finally chose the trio of DUSTY, DYSON & TREACLE. The penultimate class and princess of the greyhound world and last entrant into the best of show final were JEMMA and her handler Ryan.

We now had our finalists and if you thought the day couldn’t get any better we found out just before the final that we had managed to re-home 2 dogs during the show. Once the applause died down it was time for the final and just looking at them parading round the ring I was glad I wasn’t judging. Eventually the judge announced that he had decided and got them to line up in the middle of the ring, by now the tension was growing. Like the previous heats our judge Job Geebers announced the winners in reverse order and as the tension grew he finally announced that DUKE, a blue boy greyhound was the best in show. The winners collected their trophies and prizes and got photographed and that was the end of our very first greyhound rescue Fife dog show. This just left the tidying up and the counting of the day’s takings.

We were absolutely gobsmacked by the generosity and support we received for the day. £1200 was made on the day, we had a further £180 from sponsors, and the kennels' merchandise raised a further £130. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all these people who not only helped on the day but also the day before in the setting up of the show, after all an organiser can only organise with the support of others, so thanks to all you guys for making this an unbelievable day. We are already putting plans in place for next year’s event so watch this space !
